What we learned at the Electronic Entertainment Expo
Posted by FreedomNet
The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (more commonly known as E3) wrapped up last week after what many analysts and industry reporters called one of the best conferences in years. This is mostly due in part to the large number of popular consumer games that were featured at this year’s show. Games such as Halo 5 Guardians, Fallout 4, Star Wars Battlefront, and a Final Fantasy VII remake were among many titled announced for release within the next year. Also featured were the manufacturers of virtual reality headsets such as the Occulus Rift, Sony’s Project Morpheus, as well as a demo of Microsoft’s Hololens service in conjunction with the popular game, Minecraft.
Something that was missed by most people, however, was Sony’s announcement of its Playstation Vue service that was its version of cable TV through either its PS3 or PS4 consoles. But unlike similar service such as Apple TV or Hulu, Playstation Vue wants to not only stream live network channels to its viewers, also allow consumers to pick what channels they want to subscribe at a nominal fee for each channel. Also known as a la carte pay TV, this a considered to be a dream for many consumers who are tired of paying for fixed rates for extended TV packages that feature more channels than what a typical household would realistically watch. And while ESPN and HBO are two of noticeably absent channels not featured on Playstation Vue, the existing list of channels is still impressive; CBS, FOX, NBC, Fox Sports 1, NBCSN, MTV, TNT, and Nickalodeon are some of the many offerings for consumers to pick from. But since these channels will be streaming live through your device they do require an internet connection.
