Netflix: It started out as a simple idea; rather than having to go out to rent or purchase a movie, movies could be delivered to you at a fixed rate with access to basically any film that was in DVD format. It was a game changer at the time and was the beginning of the end for many video renting stores across the nation, the most well-known being Blockbuster LLC which eventually filed for bankruptcy in 2010.

In 2008, Netflix changed the game once again and introduced its first batch of movies and shows through their internet streaming service that allowed anyone with a Netflix account to freely watch media over the internet eliminating the need for physical copies. While it is certainly nice to be able to watch a wide assortment of movies at any given time, Netflix’s streaming of entire seasons worth of TV shows is arguably a more popular attraction of the service. Netflix has recognized this and in recent years financed a number of critically acclaimed shows that are exclusive to Netflix, such as House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Arrested Development Season 4 and future upcoming projects such as Marvel’s Daredevil series and Trailer Park Boys Seasons 8 and 9.

According to the latest Nielsen report for 2014, over 40% of homes in the US have access to a subscription-based video on-demand service, up from 36% in 2013. Even more telling is that the number of Americans who subscribe to broadband internet but do not pay for TV (10.5 million in 2013) has gone up 16% since the previous year. The reason for this are many, but the benefits of a streaming service compared to traditional cable TV play a big role in people choosing to ditch cable. There’s no need to pay for a separate bill just to be able to get TV, something that is usually expensive and comes with channels that many do not even watch. No longer do you need to wait for AMC to do a re-run of your favorite episode of Breaking Bad, or have to pay $20-30 for a DVD set for Season 2 of Mad Men. The entire catalog of episodes is available to you at any time, any place…. Provided that you have an internet connection of course.
