US Millennials Lag Behind in Tech Skills

Most people will agree with the statement that a lot has changed in the past 10 years in how we digest information. The same is true for how we learn and educate ourselves. Growing up as a kid or teenager in the 21st century, many would agree that it is an essential skill to be able to know how to properly locate information using a variety of resources in a timely and efficient manner. However, a recent poll conducted by the Washington Post indicates that we may have misguided perceptions that “millennials” in the US have high aptitude when it comes to technology. Developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, better known as the OECD, the PIAAC test focuses on literacy, math and technological problem-solving and is conducted in 23 developed nations. By assessing the thinking abilities and workplace skills of adults, its goal is to figure out how prepared people are to work in a complex, modern society.

A surprising result was that not only did millennials in the US rank poorly in literacy and math compared to their international peers, they ranked second to last in technical problem-solving. While the reasons why can be debated, it should also be noted that the US also ranks 28th in the world in percentage of the population with internet access.

We here at FreedomNet Solutions realize that not everyone has easy access to the Internet. Living in rural areas with little to no network infrastructure can force a lot of individuals to seek service from providers that almost always have limits on the amount of content you are able to access before additional charges start to incur. At FreedomNet Solutions, we understand the importance of having access to unlimited Internet that is not bound by restrictive data limits of other carriers. With offices located in Byron Center and servicing a wide area of operations in Lower Michigan, we pride ourselves in being a local company and the #1 provider of no limits Internet in rural Michigan.
